4th World Day for Grandparents and Elderly

“Do not cast me off in my old age” – Psalm 71

Pope Francis established a World Day of Grandparents & the Elderly which took place for the first time in 2021. It falls on the Sunday closest to the Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, Grandparents of Jesus.

The theme of this year’s World Day for Grandparents and Elderly, is “Do not cast me off in my old age”. It is meant to call attention to the fact that, sadly, loneliness is the bitter lot in life of many elderly persons, so often the victims of the throw-away culture.

In this year of preparation for the Jubilee, which the Holy Father wishes to be devoted to prayer, the theme of the World Day is taken from Psalm 71, the plea of an elderly person who reflects on the story of his friendship with God.

By cherishing the charisms of grandparents and the elderly, and the contribution they make to the life of the Church, the World Day seeks to support the efforts of every ecclesial community to forge bonds between the generations and to combat loneliness, in the awareness that – as Scripture states – “It is not good for man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18). ‘If you are lucky enough to still have grandparents, visit them, cherish them and celebrate them while you can.’

Grandparents, with their gentle presence and heartfelt advice, hold a special place in our hearts. They are a family’s greatest treasure and the family’s strong foundation. They can pass on important family traditions and life stories that a grandchild will not only relish when young, but will grow to appreciate even more over time.

Grandparents have a magical ability to create a safe and nurturing space where their grandchildren feel cherished and accepted. In their embrace, grandchildren find comfort and understanding as they offer a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on and a wealth of wisdom from a lifetime of experiences.

Loving grandparents celebrate the smallest achievements and shower their grandchildren with endless pride and encouragement. They instill a sense of belonging and self-worth, which builds confidence and resilience.

Grandparents provide an unwavering support system, empowering their grandchildren to dream big and reach for the stars. The love of a grandparent is immeasurable.

A special blessing will be given at all masses this weekend (27/28 July) for the Grandparents and Elderly in our Parish.

Prayer for the 4th World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly

Lord, faithful God, You who created us in Your image, You who never leaves us alone and who accompanies us through every season of life, do not abandon us. Take care of us, and grant us, once again, the ability to discover ourselves and recognise that we are Your children.

Renew our hearts with your Word, and do not allow anyone to be cast aside. May your Spirit of love fill us with Your tenderness and teach us to say: “I will not abandon you!” to those we meet on our journey. With the help of your beloved Son, may we not conform to the sadness of loneliness.

Help us to look to the future with renewed hope, and make the World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly a day without loneliness, and a day abundant with the first-fruits of Your peace.

Amen
